East Africa: Regional Forest Law Passed

The EALA, the East African Community lawmakers, last week passed the EAC Forests Management and Protection Bill 2015 placing a regional framework to conserve the environment. The Bill, whose mover was Christophe Bazivamo, sailed through at its 3rd Reading after the Committee stage scrutinized its various clauses, proposing amendments.

Tanesco fires seven senior staff

Tanzania Electric Supply Company , one of the public firms facing government scrutiny is now taking measures to clean the institution with the sacking of seven senior officials implicated in embezzlement and theft cases. Addressing journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Tanesco Managing Director, Felchesmi Mramba said the officials had been sacked over the span of the last two months in a move aimed at restoring discipline amongst its staff and bringing an end to the culture of corruption that had long plagued the public sector.

Tanzanian president sacks port chief in anti-graft campaign

Dec 7 Newly-elected President John Magufuli has sacked the head of Tanzania’s ports authority and the top official in the transport ministry, part of a campaign to root out corruption and inefficiency in the East African nation. Magufuli fired the director general of the Tanzania Ports Authority , Awadhi Massawe, and the permanent secretary in the transport ministry, Shaaban Mwinjaka, following the disappearance of over 2,700 shipping containers at the port.
