DICOTA PRESIDENT – 2 Candidates

Dr. Frank Minja

Frank Minja is a currently one of the DICOTA’s Eexcutive Committee Member, also a Board member and among the founding members of Maendeleo, which grew out of an effort to recycle used textbooks from Harvard Medical School to Medical Schools in Tanzania, circa 2002. Maendeleo has since become fully incorporated and sent many used textbooks to HKMU, MUHAS and KCMC Medical Schools in Tanzania. Maendeleo has also been involved in HIV/AIDS advocacy sponsoring the first ever AIDS Walk Dar in December 2006. Maendeleo now promotes excellence in medical education through merit based scholarships at Weill-Bugando Medical School. Frank is currently an Asst Professor of Neuroradiology at Yale in New Haven, CT.

Dr. Mary Banda

I am honored to have been nominated for the position of President of the DICOTA’s Executive committee. Here is my story: A senior medical doctor with over 25 years of experience in hospital medicine and a fellow in both the American College of Physicians and Hospital Medicine, Dr. Mary Banda graduated Magna Cum Laude with a dual degree in chemistry and biology before earning her medical doctorate with academic excellence from Pennsylvania State University. She completed her residency at Hershey Medical Center, earning a board certification in internal medicine and has since been further trained in hyperbaric medicine.

Working at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield MA, she helped to pioneer the first fulltime hospitalist program in the United States. Throughout her career, she has served as a speaker at medical conferences and continuing medical education. She has served as a clinical professor to medical students, residents, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Her medical expertise and volunteer work earned her the “Mercy Medical Center Community Service Physician of the year Award”, “Links International trends and service award”, “Hats off International health care and volunteer award”, “Springfield Stone Soul Festival Award”, October 2nd being designated as “Dr. Mary Banda Day”, Springfield Mayor Proclamation, “YMCA woman of achievement award”, Catholic Woman of the year award” and Massachusetts Congress and Senator Citations.

While Dr. Banda has served as a physician for the majority of her adult life, her true passion is her nonprofit charitable organization: Jambo Tanzania, INC. (www.jambotanzania.us) Dedicated to bettering lives and providing healthcare to the people of Bukoba, Tanzania; her efforts have led to the construction of an elementary school in Gera, as well has provided clean water to the villagers and school children and the near completion of health care center and hospital. She routinely organizes volunteer missions serving up to 2000 patients every other year. Her future goal is to provide 24/7 medical longitudinal care at the at the Kashambya area hospital. In addition, she has served as deputy director of Bukoba Development Foundation (BUDEFO) and is an investing member of Bukoba Investment Group (BIG) and DICOTA with a passion for Sharing my expertise and opportunities with Tanzania. Ultimately, she hopes to spread the blessings and opportunities that she feels so fortunate to have received.
